13-day Tour of the Pyrenees:

Step by step, 13-day Tour of the Pyrenees through Lourdes (LDE) and Toulouse (TLS):

Example of a 13-day itinerary starting with arrival at LOURDES (LDE) and departure from TOULOUSE (TLS):

      To complete a road bike trip across the following mountain passes in the Pyrenees, it is best to use your own car to transport your bike. In this case, we can also consider the following proposal to organize your trip. However, in many cases, it would be more advantageous to fly and rent a road bike. This is especially true if we live far away from the Pyrenees or do not have our own road bike. And it is precisely for these cyclists that the following itinerary is proposed, featuring the most spectacular routes in the Pyrenees:

      1. Upon arrival at Aéroport de Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrénées (LDE) we travel to Argelès Gazost based on the following information; If we arrive at TLS airport, we can take a train to Lourdes, including transportation from the airport to the train station, which will take approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes.
After checking in for a 3-day stay, we head to the bike rental shop - information available here;
In Argelès Gazost, we have 9 suggested routes; If we have 3-4 hours upon arrival, it's worth going to the Hautacam / Col de Tramassel (1615m a.s.l.) - the entire round trip is 36km
If it's already late, we can leave the ride on the aforementioned route for the morning of the departure day from Argelès Gazost;
      2. Proposal for the next day is to climb Col de Spandelles (be cautious on the descent as it's famous for Pogacar's crash - you can watch it on YouTube), then Col du Soulor, and finally a short ascent to Col des Bordères. The entire route is available here;
      3. Another suggestion for the next day is to ride to Cautarets, where Tour de France finishes have often taken place, and then continue to Cambasque (stage from TdF 2023 - July 6) and after the descent, climb up to Pont d'Espagne. The entire route is available here;
      4. On the following day, we move to Luz Saint Sauveur, where we have 8 suggested routes;
Option A: If we didn't have time to climb Hautacam/Col de Tramassel on the first day upon arrival in Argelès Gazost, we can do it this morning. After checking out and returning the bike to the rental shop, we take the bus to Luz Saint Sauveur at 13:03;
Option B: In the morning, after breakfast, we take the bus to Luz Saint Sauveur at 09:33 - the schedule is available here;
In Luz Saint Sauveur, after checking in for a 3-day stay, we head to the selected bike rental shop - information available here;
Whether we arrive by bus in the morning at 10:08 or in the afternoon at 13:44, we rent a bike and ride to Luz Ardiden ski resort (1717m a.s.l.) - the entire round trip is 33km;
      5.The suggestion for the next day is to climb Col de Tentes (2208m a.s.l.) - due to its location in the National Park, Tour de France stages have never taken place here, but the route is worth recommending due to its profile and views; The entire route is available here;
      6. Next day is also a scenic route in Parc national des Pyrénées, to Cirque de Troumouse (2088m a.s.l.) and on the way back, we ride to Lac des Gloriettes; The entire route is available here;
      7. On the last day, we start early in the morning to tackle the spectacular Col du Tourmalet (2115m a.s.l.); The entire route is described here and the round trip is 37km;
On the same day, after returning the bike to the rental shop, at 18:01, we take the bus to Lourdes, where we disembark at around 18:52. We rent bikes again to set off on the route early the next morning. We stay for 2 days as we have more spectacular climbs ahead;
      8. In the morning, we go to the train station with our rented bikes and take a train to Sarrance with a transfer in Pau. Depending on the day of the week, we can catch the train as early as 06:34, arriving in Sarrance at 08:33 (Saturday and high season), or at 08:00, arriving in Sarrance at 10:13 (Sunday). Detailed information and the option to purchase tickets can be found on the French railways website;
Straight from the train, we start the route passing through Col de Marie-Blanque, Col d'Aubisque from Laruns, and continue on the scenic route through Col du Soulor. The entire route is 95km long, and there are no issues with dining options along the way;
      9. n the morning, we once again go to the train station with our rented bikes to take a train to Lannemezan in just 41 minutes, without transfers. Upon arrival, we follow the route with the climbs of Col d'Aspin and Col du Tourmalet, this time from the Sainte-Marie-de-Campan side. These two climbs, in this particular order, are often featured in the Tour de France. The entire route is 117km long, with approximately 30km of uphill sections;
Upon returning to Lourdes, we return the bikes to the rental shop;
      10. In the morning, we take the train again to Lannemezan, where we transfer to bus 963 heading to Saint Lary Soulan. Depending on the day of the week, we should disembark at our destination no later than 10:01. The schedule can be found here; We proceed to our accommodation (3-night stay), drop off our luggage, and head to the bike rental shop - information available here;
In Saint Lary Soulan, we have 4 suggested routes and the proposed route for the arrival day is a 44-kilometer ride with a climb to Col de Portet (2211m a.s.l.) and a short ascent to Pla d'Adet;
      11. The suggestion for the next day is to tackle 3 climbs according to the route - Col d'Azet, Col de Peyresourde, and then another ascent of Col d'Azet from the other side;
      12. The last day of our stay in the Pyrenees is dedicated to a scenic ride to Lac de Cap de Long and Lac d'Aubert;
      13. If our departure from TLS or LDE airports is in the late evening, we still have time to ride one more cycling route. If the flight is in the morning or afternoon, we head to the airport at the appropriate time, using bus 963 to Lannemezan and then the train to either Lourdes or Toulouse;

During the 13-day stay in the Pyrenees, we can conquer 20 climbs, including 3 from both sides (Col du Tourmalet, Col d'Azet i Col du Soulor);
Note: Remember to make a bike rental reservation in advance at the rental shops;
In each town, we can choose any routes we want to ride. Of course, routes can be modified or utilized using other services like Komoot or Strava. The entire example is just a proposal considering logistics for a cycling trip in the Pyrenees;
