You can reach the mountain pass from either Col du Lautaret or Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne. Below is a suggested route starting in Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne, climbing to the Col du Télégraphe (1566m.a.s.l.) and then continuing to Col du Galibier; return the same way to Modane;

By regional train, we arrive at Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne, where we start the route according to the map;
- 0,3km: (720m.a.s.l.) we turn right onto D902 road - signposted Col du Galibier;
- 12,4km: Col du Télégraphe (1566m.a.s.l.) - the first destination reached; food and drink available and a drinking water tap;

We continue along the D902 road;
- 17,3km: Valloire (1413m.a.s.l.) a good place for coffee (food and drink available); one of five: drinking water taps;
- 27,2km: (1977m.a.s.l.) on the left is the restaurant "Auberge Plan Lachat" with outdoor seating - a good place for coffee now or on the return journey; 30m further is a drinking water intake;
- 31,1km: (2297m.a.s.l.) on the right is the Marco Pantani monument;
- 35,3km: Col du Galibier (2642m.a.s.l.) - the main destination reached;

We return the same way to Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne;
- 70,5km: (718m.a.s.l.) - we turn right onto D1006 road towards Modane;
- 74,3km: (830m.a.s.l.) - to avoid a busy road, after the bridge, we turn left onto D215C - signposted Le Poucet;
- 78km: (904m.a.s.l.) at the roundabout we take the second exit back onto D1006 road and continue to the parking lot at Gare de Modane.
