You can reach the mountain pass from either Col du Lautaret or Valloire. Below is a proposed route starting from Le Bourg-d'Oisans, climbing up to the Col du Lautaret (2057m.a.s.l.) and then continuing to the Col du Galibier before returning the same way.

We're starting the route according to the map;
- 0,7km: (725m.a.s.l.) at the roundabout, take the first exit onto D1091;
- 28,3km: La Grave (1463m.a.s.l.) on the right side, there is a drinking water intake and a public toilet; there are also plenty of dining options - a good place to stop for coffee;
- 39km: Col du Lautaret (2057m.a.s.l.) - the first goal achieved; there are dining options and a drinking water intake (at the back of the car park) by the large parking area. From there, follow D902 towards Col du Galibier;
